The Bahamas

My girlfriend Maria and I decided to go on a cruise to the Bahamas for my spring break, so she had to take a Thursday and a Friday off from work. The cruise is called Discovery Cruise Lines. and it only takes you the Bahamas in 4 hours and then you need to get a hotel on the island. On the island we stayed in Freeport in a resort called Our Lucaya for 3 nights.

Day 1

boat

The first day we sailed from Port Everglades, Ft. Lauderdale at 7:45 am. It was really cold that day and the weather was not that great, the ship was ok but nothing impressive. Once we were in the cruise for about an hour we had a wonderful "all-you-can-eat" breakfast buffet, with a wide variety of the "healthy stuff" (fruits, etc.) and the stuff you probably really want... scrambled eggs, bacon, sweet rolls, and just about everything else you can think of! After that Maria and I took advantage of the casino and starting playing black jack at 11:am, and surprisingly we won $150 which was a really good way to start the trip... Then we had lunch on the ship and arrived to Freeport around 1:00 PM where we did customs and got a cab to the resort.

After check in the weather was still bad so we decided not to go to the beach but instead go to the city. In the city there was a lot of people... mostly spring breakers having a good time at the local bars, so we decided to have some of the local beer which is called "Kalik" at one of those bars... Later on we had dinner and went to sleep early in order to take advantage of day two.

Day 2

resort

The weather got better overnight, in the morning the sun was really bright so we decided to go to the beach on the resort. The beach was beautiful... white sand, and the water was so clear I could see my feet. After getting some sun for a couple of hours Maria and I went to walk around the resort, and what a magnificent resort it was. This resort is beautifully decorated, with a definite taste of the Caribbean. The resort is on 7 1/2 acres of beautiful, clear water. It has 3 hotels and 1 all-suite building, 4 pools, 3 Jacuzzis, an abundance of restaurants, golf courses, tennis courses, and the resort is not even finished! They are currently working on a casino, and Retail Street which is going to be home to some of the best shopping on the island. They also have a place on the beach where you can rent jet skis and sailboats, as well as participate in many other water sports.

resort

Later that afternoon we took a banana boat ride and rented jet skis. If you like water sports, then Our Lucaya would make a great place for you to go. They are a blast. We also went over to the International Bazaar. That's pretty interesting. Lots of straw markets, and shops from Japan, the Middle East, Scandinavia, France, Spain, and even a little mall. The things for sale were a lot more expensive than in the rest of the island. To end the day we left the resort and went for a romantic dinner at the Port Lucaya Market Place.

Day 3

reef

On day 3 we woke up and decided to go snorkeling. We took a taxi to Deadman's Reef; neither of us had snorkeled before. Once we got the hang of the gear, snorkeling went smoothly (only an occasional mouth of salt water). We had to swim out pretty far to get to the reef, but it was shallow most of the way. Once we made it to the reef we were in awe. There were huge schools of fish, giant brain coral, among many other types. We saw enormous parrot fish (we're talking 3 feet long) and some fish that you'd see in an aquarium---bright blue ones, yellow ones, etc. The waves were a bit rough on the opposite side of the rocks near the reef, but they had rafts anchored out there to hold onto and rest. We snorkeled for about an hour, went back to shore and had a beer and ate our packed lunch (compliments of room service!) then we went back out for more. I have to say that it was an incredible experience.

reef

If you go to Freeport, you owe it to yourself to snorkel at Deadmans Reef. Trust me. I think it was about $7 per person each way by taxi and about $8 or $10 for use of the area and all of the gear. The reef had very nice gear. We had to be back by 3:30pm and we made it with no problem. Our taxi driver was cool and very chatty. The area was very poor and kind of depressing on the ride over, but the people seemed happy and laid back.

lucaya Market

Since it was the last night Maria and I decided to party a little bit at the Lucaya Market. When we got there the place was packed with people, all the bars were going crazy... I guess because it was the last night for all the spring breakers. In the middle of the Market there was a reggae band and tons of people; after a few daiquiris we were both dancing and having an awesome time.

The next day we left early in the morning back to Florida with a good suntan. I definitely recommend going to Freeport and specially the Lucaya resort. It was a very relaxing trip and definitely a good place to visit with someone you love
